A Mini Golden Retriever is a cross of a Golden Retriever, and smaller breeds, typically Cocker Spaniels, Cavaliers, or Poodles, with some even using other breeds. On average, they are 30-45 pounds, but the weights vary greatly. The first Mini Golden was created in 2003 by Kathy Burgess at GoldenQuest. Her dogs are exclusively Golden Retriever and Poodle crosses.
The reason GoldenQuest exclusively uses Golden Retriever and Poodle for the breed, is because we believe we get better temperaments and health, along with less shedding, and better longevity than we would with any other breed combination. Our breeding program is much more challenging to accomplish with these two breeds than it would be with any other, but we feel that our dogs and clients are worth the extra effort. This is also why we know of no other breeder who has been able to successfully replicate our program.
We love the science, so we are very selective of all factors big and small, such as:
Our goal has been to not only make the
best-looking dogs but also the
healthiest. Many years of dedication and our passion for perfection has only made us better, and we will only continue to strive for growth.
We encourage you to check out our website and social media, research the history of the breed and ask us questions! When you are ready, here is the process:
*Getting on our Wait List for future litters is always an option as well.
*When compared to a Standard Golden Retriever
Comfort Retrievers® came from the owner Kathy Burgess’ drive to be unique – something special and different than the rest. She went on a mission to incorporate the amazing well-known personality of a Golden Retriever, but in a more convenient size, and with better health for the entire life of the dog. She developed her Health and Longevity Program which is a cornerstone of our dogs.
Here at GoldenQuest®, we have a wonderful program that allows all our breeding dogs to be in loving homes right here in Kentucky while still being a part of our breeding program.
The Guardian dogs are co-owned between you and GoldenQuest®. We own breeding rights and pay all breeding-related costs, while you get to also enjoy your best friend!

GoldenQuest Mini Golden Retrievers offer all the fun and affection of a traditional Golden Retriever in a more manageable size, typically ranging from 30-45 lbs. This makes them perfect companions for both apartment dwellers and those with larger homes.
Miniature Golden Retrievers from GoldenQuest have a life expectancy that extends 5+ years beyond that of a standard Golden Retriever. This longer lifespan is a testament to our meticulous health-focused breeding practices, ensuring more joyful years with your furry friend.
Our Comfort® Retrievers are hypoallergenic, making them an excellent choice for families with allergies. The hypoallergenic nature of these dogs means fewer sneezes and more snuggles for everyone
Most of our Comfort® Retriever are straight or wavy coated. Sometimes, we produce curly coated Comforts. We classify our coat types based on DNA results, not on visual appearance.
As an optional enhancement, each Mini Golden Retriever can be trained by professional off-site trainers in their home environment before joining yours. This pre-homecoming training ensures that your new addition is well-behaved and ready to integrate smoothly into your family.
To ensure that they parent healthy puppies, our breeding dogs undergo full health testing. This rigorous screening helps maintain the high standard of health and vitality that Comfort® Retriever owners have come to expect from GoldenQuest.
When Kathy Burgess embarked on creating the first mini golden retriever, she quickly realized the absence of a health and longevity program specifically designed for breeders. Driven by a commitment to produce the healthiest of all breeds, she created a tailored program that exceeds even high standards in the breeding world. This program is focused on delivering not only the healthiest breeds but ensuring they lead long, joyous lives by your side.
To ensure that every mini golden retriever reaches its full health potential, GoldenQuest rigorously applies advanced genetic testing and comprehensive health screening protocols. Our breeding program is specifically designed to eliminate or drastically reduce the incidence of inheritable diseases, setting a new standard of health within the breed.
Our approach to breeding miniature golden retrievers is grounded in education and continuous improvement. From the moment they are born, our mini golden retrievers receive the highest level of care. This includes regular health checks, vaccinations, and preventive treatments, all administered by our full-time veterinary staff. Our proactive approach to health care ensures that all health concerns are addressed promptly, supporting a robust start for every puppy.
Known as the “Super Dog” Program and standard for all of our Comfort® Retrievers, we introduce all of our mini golden puppies to training that enhances the developmental pathways starting at 4 days old. It focuses on creating puppies with higher stress tolerance, stronger immune systems, and better adaptability.
Implemented alongside ENS, we also practice what we call “Puppy Culture,” provides a holistic approach to early-stage socialization and training for miniature golden retrievers, emphasizing sound desensitization and clicker conditioning.

Miniature Golden Retrievers are a cross of Golden Retriever and smaller breeds, typically Cocker Spaniel or King Charles. On average, they weigh 30-45 pounds. Our Mini Goldens are crossed with specific Poodle lineage to avoid health and temperament issues the other breeds can cause, and are hypoallergenic, shed less and live longer than Golden Retrievers.
A typical Comfort® Retriever weighs between 30-45 pounds. Occasionally, we have some that weigh more than 45 pounds, or even less than 30 pounds.
Our larger Comfort® Retriever are generally from a Golden Retriever bred to a Comfort Retriever®. They generally have more Golden Retriever in them, so they are a closer carbon copy than the smaller Comforts. Their parents’ average weight is 45 pounds or larger.
The smaller Comfort® Retriever are generally from a breeding of two Comfort® Retriever. They generally have a little more poodle, so they may have more hypoallergenic and reduced shedding traits. Their parents’ average weight is typically below 40 pounds.
Most of our Comfort® Retriever are light to medium gold, but we have a full range of Golden Retriever colors, from cream to gold to red. Occasionally, we get white spots (abstract) or parti-colors from the Poodle side.
Most of our Comfort® Retriever are straight or wavy coated. Sometimes, we produce curly coated Comforts. We classify our coat types based on DNA results, not on visual appearance.
Our Comfort® Retriever are reduced shed, especially when compared to Golden Retrievers. Shed levels are individual to the dog, so while we hope that the majority of our dogs are low shedding, there are those who are moderate to heavy shedders.
There are many factors that influence shedding as well. Some of these include season changes, weather, stress, illness, and a puppy transitioning to its adult coat. For these reasons, we can’t guarantee your dog’s shedding won’t change over time.
We offer a 2 year health warranty for all genetic conditions, that can be expanded to a 10 year warranty if you participate in our Health and Longevity Program by feeding your puppy Life's Abundance and NuVet Supplements! *More info here*
